कईं शब्द हैं जिनके सामान्य अर्थ से आध्यात्मिक अर्थ भिन्न होता है।
जैसे स्वार्थ, जिसका सामान्य अर्थ लगाया जाता है खुदगर्जी। पर स्वार्थ का अध्यात्मिक अर्थ है "स्व" का अर्थ, अपनाआपा का असली अर्थ जान जाना। तो सामान्य अर्थों में जहाँ स्वार्थी होना बड़ी बुरी बात है, वहीं अध्यात्म में इससे बड़ी श्रेष्ठ बात कोई नहीं।
ऐसा ही एक शब्द है "परहित"। सामान्यतया परहित का अर्थ दूसरे का हित लगाया जाता है, जबकी इसका आध्यात्मिक अर्थ है "अपनी आत्मा का हित"।
ध्यान दें, दो तत्व हैं पर और अपर। पर माने प्रकृतिपार, आत्मिक क्षेत्र। अपर माने प्रकृति, मायिक क्षेत्र। जब यह कहा जाता है कि परहित ही सबसे बड़ा धर्म है, तब "पर" शब्द का अर्थ "दूसरा" लगाया ही कैसे जा सकता है? क्योंकि सत्य तो यह है कि यहाँ दूसरा कोई है ही नहीं, बल्कि दूसरा तो माया के अंतराल में भ्रम से भास रहा है, अपर है, भ्रम है, माया है, स्वप्न का दृश्य है, संसार है, बंधन है, गले की फांसी है।
संसारी चाहे जो समझे, पर साधक के लिए परहित माने येन केन प्रकारेन अात्मा का हित कर लेना। आत्मा का हित माने आत्मा को भ्रम से, बंधन से छुड़ा लेना। यही सर्वोच्च धर्म है। और परपीड़ा का अर्थ है दूसरे को सत्य मानकर, असत् में उलझकर, आत्मा को योनियों के चक्कर में डालकर, आत्मा को पीड़ा पहुँचाते रहना। इससे बड़ा कोई पाप नहीं है।
यही धर्म और अधर्म का भेद है।
रही बात सेवा की, तो सेवा से इंकार किसे है? सेवा तो स्वभाव से होनी ही चाहिए, पेड़ की छाया में किसी ने विश्राम ले लिया तो पेड़ ने सेवा की क्या? की नहीं, स्वभाव से हो गई। योंही सेवा तो मनुष्यमात्र का स्वभाव होना ही चाहिए। इसे परमात्मा प्राप्ति का पर्याय मान कर माया के ठेकेदार मत बनो।
लोकेशानन्द कहता है कि एक नाम रूप या कोई विधि पकड़कर जुट जाओ, रास्ते में कोई मिले तो स्वाभाविक सेवा होती रहे, इसकी योजना नहीं बनानी।

There are many words whose spiritual meaning differs from the general meaning.
Such as selfishness, which is generally interpreted as self-interest. But the spiritual meaning of selfishness means to know "self", knowing the true meaning of the soul. So while being selfish in the general sense is a very bad thing, there is nothing better than this in spirituality.
One such word is "Parhit". Normally Parhit means to serve another, while its spiritual meaning is "to find the true self".
Note, there are two elements- "Par and Apar". Par means transcendence, spiritual realm. Apar means Nature, Maya Zone. When it is said that Parhit is the greatest religion, then how can the word "Par" imply "another"? Because the fact is that there is no one else here. Rather the other is visible under illusion under the influence of Maya, is apar, is illusion, is a vision of a dream, is world, is a bond.
No matter what the world thinks, but for the seeker, parhit means to find the true self. To know the soul, to liberate the soul from illusion, from bondage. This is the highest religion. And Par-peeda means to keep tormenting the soul by believing the other to be true. Entangling the soul and putting it in the circle of birth and death. There is no greater sin than this.
This is the difference between Dharm and Adharm.
If you talk about service, who refused? Service should be by nature. If someone took rest in the shade of the tree, what did the tree do? The tree did not serve, it happened on its own. This is how service should be a human nature. Don't become a contractor of Maya by considering it as a synonym for divine attainment.
Lokeshanand says that follow the correct method of salvation, if you find someone on the way, then service should happen naturally, do not plan for it.
