तप शब्द कान में पड़ते ही, गिरि कन्दराओं में, पद्मासन जमाकर, भूख प्यास और वासनाओं का दमन करते, किन्हीं जटाजूटधारी ॠषियों की कल्पना स्वाभाविक ही ध्यान में आ जाती है। यही कारण है कि सामान्य मनुष्य कहते दिखाई देते हैं कि हम तो गृहस्थ हैं, तप करना हमारे बस की बात नहीं।

जबकि सत्य तो यह है कि चाहे कोई हो, तप किसी के भी जीवन में कम नहीं। यह बात अलग है कि उसके तप की दिशा भिन्न है।

तप माने किसी लक्ष्य विशेष के लिए, उसकी प्राप्ति का साधन न छोड़ते हुए, सब प्रकार के तापों को, कष्टों को, दुखों को, धैर्यपूर्वक भोगते चले जाना।

विचार करें, कितने ही वर्षों, अपने छप्पर में बैठकर, भूखे अधनंगे शरीर से, सुबह शाम चार बजे से दस बजे तक, गायक एक ही राग के आलाप का, वादक वाद्य यंत्र की कला का, नर्तक एक ही नृत्य का, चित्रकार चित्र बनाने का, अभ्यास करता ही है, तब कहीं जाकर उसकी साधना सफल होती है।

एक खिलाड़ी, सर्दी गर्मी की परवाह न करते हुए, अभावग्रस्त जीवन जीते हुए भी, दिन रात पसीना बहाया करता है। राजनेता लाख गाली धूल धक्का खाकर भी, गली गली, चौक चौराहों पर लोक संग्रह करता है। लेखक आँख पर मोटा चश्मा लगने पर भी, एक एक पंक्ति को सोचते हुए, सारी सारी रात बेचैनी से करवटें बदलता है।

योंही वैज्ञानिक, विद्यार्थी, कारीगर, सैनिक योद्धा और उद्योगपतियों की तो बात ही क्या, छोटा मजदूर तक कितना तप करके जीवनयापन करता है। एक सामान्य गृहिणी, घर के सदस्यों की डाँट खाती हुई भी, सगर्भा होने से मृत्यु पर्यन्त, अपने बच्चे और परिवार के लिए अनन्त तप करती है, तब कहीं जाकर उसका दिन गुजरता है।

कहाँ तक कहें? कामी अपने चोंचले पूरे करने के लिए, सेंधमार चोर चोरी करने के लिए, प्राणों और प्रतिष्ठा की परवाह न करते हुए, गुप्त रहकर, महीनों चौकसी और प्रतीक्षा करते जागते हैं। क्या यह कम तप है?

सिंह से चींटी तक, बगीचे के वृक्ष से जंगली घास तक, सब स्थान, सब समय, तप तप तप, यही शब्द गूंजता है। जैसे बहुत तपाने के बाद ही सोना इच्छित आकार में ढलता है, तप से ही जीवन की दशा और दिशा तय होती है।

लोकेशानन्द का प्रश्न है कि जब इतना तप आपने कैसे कर लिया, आपको मालूम भी न पड़ा, तब थोड़ा तप यदि परमात्मा प्राप्ति के निमित्त कर लें, तो आपका क्या बिगड़ता है?
