रामायण कहानी भर नहीं है। मोरारी बापू तो कहते हैं कि कोई इसे कहानी मात्र कहे तो भीतर इतनी चोट पड़ती है मानो माँ को वेश्या कहा हो।

यह वो राष्ट्र है, वो संस्कृति है जहाँ रघुवंशी राजा हरीशचन्द्र सत्य के लिए एक चाण्डाल के हाथों बिक गए, तारा बिक गई, रोहित को साँप ने काटा तो पुत्र का शव लेकर तारा श्मशान में आई।

पुत्र का शव देखकर भी हरीशचन्द्र कहते हैं कि तारा! संस्कार की कीमत है सवा गज कपड़ा और सवा सेर खिचड़ी। खिचड़ी मुझे मिलती है, कपड़ा मालिक को जाता है, खिचड़ी छोड़ सकता हूँ, कपड़ा नहीं छोड़ सकता। पुत्र की ही लाश क्यों न हो, मालिक से दगा नहीं कर सकता। कपड़ा तो चाहिए ही।

तारावती के पास कपड़ा कहाँ? कपड़े के निमित्त, तारावती ने आधी साड़ी फाड़कर दी तब संस्कार हुआ।

ऐसी संस्कृति के लिए कुछ भी, कैसे भी मत बोलो।

तुमसे पहले जो ऐसा बोल रहे थे, उनका हाल देखकर भी तुम्हें होश नहीं आता?

पर वस्तु की कीमत न मालूम हो तो मनुष्य अनन्त कोटि ब्रह्माण्ड नायक आनन्दकंद भगवान श्रीरामचंद्र जी को साधारण मनुष्य और उनकी अमृततुल्य कथा को साधारण कहानी मानने लगता है।

वे दुष्ट व्यापारी बहरूपिए, जो इस कथा के चार अक्षर याद करके, इसे चौक-चौराहों, मंदिर-चौपालों पर, इसकी कीमत की बोली लगा कर बेच रहे हैं, वे नहीं जानते कि यह कथा उनकी भी माँ है। वे किसे नीलाम कर रहे हैं? वे बाजारों में किसे नचा रहे हैं? किसे लुटा रहे हैं?

यह तो विलक्षण कथा है, इस कथा का एक विचार भी जीवन बदलने वाला है, तब संपूर्ण कथा अंतःकरण में उतर जाए तब तो कहना ही क्या?
